Soulsmith by Will Wight – Cradle Book 2 Review: The Action Truly Begins

Back with another review for this amazing series!

Just as I finished the first book, I jumped straight into the second one—and wow, Soulsmith is packed with even more action and excitement than the first. If you remember, in my review of Unsouled, I mentioned how it felt like an introduction to the world of Cradle and its unique magic system. Well, Soulsmith expands that foundation, giving us a broader view of the world and teasing what’s yet to come in the series.

In Unsouled, we were confined mostly to the Sacred Valley, Lindon’s isolated home region, with little knowledge of the outside world. But in Soulsmith, the story opens up tremendously. We’re introduced to a wealth of new characters, factions, and territories, each adding depth and intrigue to the narrative.

This is also where the series really starts to take off for me. Lindon begins to grow stronger and level up, and one of my favorite aspects is how we get to explore each advancement with him—unlocking new abilities and seeing how they reshape his journey.

The scale of the story expands significantly compared to the first book, and the stakes feel higher. There are even subtle hints and mentions of larger forces that we’ll encounter in future books.

I’m giving Soulsmith a solid 3.5/5. While it’s stronger than the first book, I believe it shines brightest when read as part of a set with Unsouled and Blackflame (Book 3). Luckily, the books are relatively short, making it easy to binge through them for a richer experience.

Believe me when I say: this rating is only going up from here. I’ve just finished Book 6, and I’m more excited than ever for what’s coming next in this epic journey.
